At Gawthorpe Community Academy, we value Music. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
We develop children with the following essential characteristics to help them become musicians:
At Gawthorpe, we use the Charanga scheme to teach music from EYFS to Y6. In response to the DfE Model Music Curriculum published in 2021, Charanga are currently updating their scheme of work and so the full curriculum documentation will be available in due course.
In order to supplement the Charanga curriculum, we also ensure that pupils learn about a number of significant pieces of music during their time at Gawthorpe Community Academy. Pupils are immersed in some of these pieces of music as they enter and leave assembly in the morning and also listen to and study a range of pieces in class over the year.
