Our Reading curriculum is seen as a key to success in learning across the curriculum, and for this reason it is always valued and given a high priority throughout school. We aim to provide all children with the skills to read with understanding and enjoyment. This starts at the very beginning of their time with us with a strong focus on phonics but never losing sight of the application of those skills to enable children to access a range of non-fiction as well as fiction at the appropriate level for their age.
All children are taught reading daily, with a range of approaches, and using high quality and carefully selected materials. The school is a literacy rich environment, with books given high prominence in all classrooms and a well-stocked library which all children access. Children take home reading books carefully matched to their reading ability so they are able to practise and consolidate the skills taught in class. Through strong and rigorous teaching and a love of books, we aim to nurture confident, skilful readers and create a love of reading throughout their primary education and beyond.
